Hare Park & The Sidings

Hare Park & The Sidings is a lovely local green space perfect for families looking for a free and easy day out close to home. With open fields, woodland paths and plenty of room for children to run around, it’s great for walks, scooters, footballs and picnics. The peaceful surroundings make it ideal for a slower-paced afternoon outdoors, and it’s especially popular with dog walkers and families wanting fresh air without travelling far. 

Coppers Lake

Coppers Lake is a peaceful hidden gem on the edge of Crofton, ideal for a quiet family walk and some fresh air. Surrounded by greenery and woodland, the lake is popular with walkers, anglers and people wanting a calm outdoor escape without spending money.

 Children enjoy spotting ducks, birds and wildlife around the water, and the nearby paths make it a lovely spot for scooters, balance bikes and gentle nature walks during weekends and school holidays.

Anglers Country Park

Perfect for walks, scooters, feeding ducks and spotting wildlife. There’s a brilliant lakeside walk and plenty of space for picnics.

Parking charges apply but entry is free.

Sandal Castle

The historic castle ruins sit on a hill with amazing views across Wakefield. Families can explore the remains of the medieval castle, walk the surrounding paths and enjoy the cafe.

Parking is on-street and free but limited.

Wakefield Park

Wakefield Park is made up of three other parks – Thornes ParkClarence Park and Holmfield Park. Thornes Park is home to loads of activities, plus an aviary and the secret garden and Holmfield Park includes The Holmfield Arms.

Pugneys Country Park

One of the best budget family days out near Wakefield. Great for walks, cycling, playgrounds, scooting and watching the sailing boats.

Wakefield

The Hepworth Wakefield

A brilliant family-friendly gallery with regular free family activities and creative sessions during school holidays. Great for rainy days and creative children.

National Trust - Nostell

Beautiful gardens, woodland and adventure play areas. A good option for a full day out. There is a cost to enter the gardens and house but the areas around the grounds are free to wander.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park

An amazing low-cost day out. Entry to the grounds is free and children love exploring the giant outdoor sculptures and woodland walk

Wakefield Museum

Free entry and ideal for younger children. Often runs craft sessions and holiday activities.
